While onboard
the scouts each take on their own roles and
responsibilities. We always start with a
crew leader and quartermaster, and they
assign jobs and tasks from there. A typical
week long sailing adventure is comprised of
six youth, two adult leaders and a friendly
captain from Calen Yachts. Each week is a
new adventure, and every adventure is
different. But they all have the same common
theme, creating memories that will last a
lifetime, learning new life skills, getting
personal with mother nature, earning respect
for the environment, and growing closer
together as a troop.
During their
week aboard, scouts learn to hoist the
sails, command the helm, even how to cook
dinner. In the middle of the week we return
to the marina where a mate takes them
exploring through the mangroves and nearby
island on kayaks and stand up paddle boards.
Their mate will also bring the troop small
boat sailing so the scouts can have an
opportunity to show off what they've learned
on the big boats. The day culminates with a
competitive game of beach volleyball and
dinner served in the galley. The following
day were back at sea, with a couple days
left to catch as many fish as possible and
tack our way through the Gulf of Mexico and
Atlantic Ocean. On our final day we return
to the marina after lunch and the troop
comes together to clean the boat and prepare
it for the next crew.
Calen Yachts is proud to be a part of this amazing
adventure. We just recently begun offering
similar charters out of our New Port Richey,
FL location in an effort to help get more of
our youth and Boy Scouts out on the
wonderful Gulf of Mexico. New Port Richey
doesn't have the beautiful coral reefs of
the Florida Keys, but we make up for it with
our stunning nearby islands and sailing.
During our New Port Richey scouting
adventure we take scouts and adult leaders
directly from our dock in New Port Richey
out in the the open Gulf of Mexico. Once in
open water we review knots and introduce our
beginning sailors to the art and relaxation
of sailing.
During this adventure scouts
will have an opportunity to swim ashore to
one or more of our neighboring islands where
they can practice survival skills. Building
camp fires, catching fish, camping on the
beach, and cooking with sticks over a camp
fire are all examples of some of the
activities that take place during our New
Port Richey scouting adventure.
All of our
charters are private charters, we do not put
groups together.
